Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Curl?
Yes, the sport is great for all ages and ability levels although delivering the rock is difficult for most children under 12. (In the future Wenatchee Curling Clubs hopes to purchase a set of lighter weight rocks suitable for younger children.) If you have never played before, don’t worry, we have a lot of experienced members who are happy to help.
Almost everyone can learn the basics of curling in just one evening session. You do not need to be able to skate because shoes are worn. Nor do you need to be able to lift heavy stones because the rocks are slid down the ice. Only average balance and flexibility is required. The nature of the game allows people of vastly different physical capabilities and ages to play as equals.
What Equipment Do I Need?
When you begin curling you will only need to wear athletic shoes or light hiking shoes and clothing suitable for a cool fall day. Layers work well. Some members wear light gloves and hats. All other equipment to learn to curl is provided by the club. As curlers progress in the sport they often buy their own broom or other specialized equipment.
I’m just a beginner—won’t I hold up the game?
No way! Curling has all levels of players with a wide range of abilities. Your skip and teammates can offer tips to help you keep the game moving along. The club provides instruction for new curlers as well as curling clinics for new and experienced curlers to learn together. Curling is an easy sport to pick up—beginners, novices and experienced curlers can all thoroughly enjoy a game together. As any curler will tell you, even the most seasoned veteran misses shots.
Anything Else I Should Know?
Curling is a friendly sport. We conduct ourselves in a courteous manner, shaking hands at the beginning and the end of each game and saying “Good Curling”. We congratulate good shots made by both teams. We play to win but never to humble our opponents. More importantly, we play to have fun!!!
